If you are scrambling from mid July to August you probably will not need to check the summit block and can go through Canmore, which is shorter. From either Banff 26km (16.2miles) or Calgary 106 km (66.2 miles) drive to Canmore and from the Bow River bridge in Canmore to the Mt Sparrowhawk parking lot drive 26.3 km (16.4 miles). The road from the Bow River bridge takes you past the Canmore Nordic Centre and onto the Spray Lakes road (packed gravel).

If you want to check the summit block, head west out of Calgary on the TransCanada highway # 1 for 79km (49.4 miles) and take the Kananaskis Country highway # 40 turnoff and head south. The Ribbon Creek turnoff to check the summit block is 23.4 km (14.6 miles) south. Continue south and turn right into Peter Lougheed Provincial Park which is 49km (30.6 miles) south of the TransCanada. From this turnoff drive 2 km (1.25 miles) and turn right on Spray Lakes road driving a further 37.7km (23.6 miles) north until you reach the Mt Sparrowhawk parking lot on your left.

If your base is Banff head east on the TransCanada for 52km (32.5 miles) to highway 40 and follow as above.

From the photo above you can observe the open ridge above the trees before the big rock spur and to the right of the distant summit block. To get to this point you need to head north (left) down the road for a few minutes (.3km) looking for the first orange metal stake (4 ft high) up the bank near the beginning of the trees. This is the place to enter for your hour plus of mild bushwhacking. If you have walked down the road and reach a guardrail with a creek coming down you have come too far. Go back halfway to the parking lot and enter the trees. As you wind your way up remember that you have the creek over on your left and you are trying to keep just left of center of the open ridge. The path of least resistance will be obvious. Once you attain the open ridge hike up until you reach the big rock spur, drop down left into the basin and traverse along the big rock spur until you are at its front. This will leave the final big slope, a traverse around the right side of the summit block, then a short climb up the back. Return the way you came.

Mt. Temple

Steep Hiking, Use of hands, Route finding, Some exposure !

Head west out of Calgary on the TransCanada highway # 1 to the Lake Louise town-site 187km (116.9 miles). If your base is Banff head west on the TransCanada for 56km (35.0 miles) to the Lake Louise town-site. There is only one exit so keep your eye out for it. Go straight through the town-site and up the hill; watch for the Moraine Lake turnoff to the left. Drive to the Moraine Lake parking lot (approx. 12km). Washrooms are at the parking lot.

From the parking lot walk along the right side of the lake walk past the lodge watching for the Larch Valley trail. Follow this switch-backing trail as it takes you high above Moraine Lake. As the trail levels off in the upper valley follow it around to the right to a couple of small lakes, then straight up more switchbacks to Sentinel Pass (col). From Sentinel Pass head right up a steep slope. Near the top of this slope traverse right on a path till you come to the third gully in the black/gray rock band. Ascend here and make your way up ledges to the gully, which breaches the upper band to the yellow section above. You can either continue up the gully or just right of it there is a spot behind a rock flake that affords access to the next level. From here the route is straightforward with some use of hands and takes you to a spot just below the final slope. Straight up the slope is the summit ridge with a short plod along it to the summit. The right hand side of the final slope steepens near the summit ridge so move a bit left as you near the summit ridge. Watch out for cornices on your right also. An ice axe is recommended if this slope has some snow on it perhaps even crampons depending on slope conditions. I have used an ice axe and kicked steps up this final slope when it had about 4-6 inches of crusty snow on it with verglass underneath. Verglass is ice on the rock underneath arising from daytime melting and nighttime freezing. I had to keep moving left and right to avoid the verglass. We successfully completed the slope but crampons would have lessened the degree of concern. Watching an apple my friend dropped speed its way down the slope and off a 4,000-ft drop also added food for thought. I have also climbed the final slope when there wasn’t a stitch of snow anywhere, which greatly eased any concerns. Anyway that is why it is wise to check with the Lake Louise Visitor center as to final slope conditions so you know ahead of time what to expect.

Burstall Pass Trail

Cascade Mountain

Steep Hiking, Use of Hands, Route Finding, Some Exposure
Head west out of Calgary on the TransCanada highway # 1 to Banff 132km (82.5 miles). There are only two exits into Banff the east exit and the west exit. Take the west exit or the second Banff exit off ramp and head right, up the Mt Norquay Ski hill access road rather than left into Banff. This winding road takes you just over 8km up to the Norquay Ski Hill Parking lots. Park either in the left or right parking lot and take a look at Cascade. The photo above was shot at this point. The photo shows from left to right the initial ridge, the false summit, and the final slope to the true summit. Behind the initial open ridge to the false summit lies the Cascade Amphitheatre.

From the parking lot it is 6.6 km to the Cascade Amphitheatre. From the parking lot head past the ski lodge buildings going north straight down the road with ski runs on your left. At the end of the road enter a trail continuing north. After 2.4 km you descend keeping right to the Forty-Mile Creek crossing. Cross over the wooden bridge and continue up the steep trail. At 4 km keep right at the fork and you are on your way up the switchbacks to the Cascade Amphitheatre. Once in the Amphitheatre (2,200ft done so far) the ridge on your right is the one you need to gain. About a third of the way into the Amphitheatre there is more than one trail that takes you in a right turn through the trees to the ridge. There is a definite trail up onto the ridge. If you end up too far into the Amphitheatre and the ridge face is steep backtrack along the ridge face until you find the proper ascent trail. Once you attain the ridge and climb along it past the last trees you will find yourself at the far left on the route photo above. Most people traverse along the slope then onto the ridge again overlooking the Amphitheatre. When you reach the False summit hump you begin a traverse around this to attain the final slope to the summit. This traverse is best when totally clear of snow. The last traverse to the final slope is quite sheltered and needs to be virtually clear of snow for a safe crossing. Use a pair of binoculars and check it out from downtown Banff before you commit yourself. From here the climb up the last slope is straightforward with some use of hands but no real exposure.

From the Bow River bridge in Canmore it抯 around 21+ km to the parking spot. The road from the Bow River bridge takes you past the Canmore Nordic Centre and onto the Spray Lakes road (packed gravel). When you see the signed "Driftwood Day Use Area" continue on for another 1.4 km to a lakeside grassy pulloff spot. If you pass the sign for Spurling Creek you have gone too far.

From the parking spot you can see the upper slopes of Wind Tower. Cross the road to the trailhead on the left bank of the creek which will take you to West Wind Pass which lies between Wind Tower on your right and Rimwall on your left. Stay left at the first fork in the trail and then stay right at the next fork. The trail takes you high above the creek and up to Wind Pass. Allow approx 1 ?1 ?hours to Wind Pass. Actually just before Wind Pass proper there is a trail that begins to traverse the side slopes of Wind Tower. From this trail there are a number of faint trails but the idea is to traverse south until you get around the cliff bands and onto the long open slope to the summit. This long open slope faces the Spray Lake. Once on this slope it抯 a long plod to the summit with increasingly scenic views.

Mist Mountain

Steep Hiking, Some Use of Hands

This route is the easiest one up Mist Mountain and is found in Tony and Gillean Daffern抯 Kananaskis Trail Guide book. The routes mentioned in Alan Kane抯 book are much more difficult and require careful route finding experience.
Head west out of Calgary on the TransCanada highway # 1 for 79km (49.4 miles) and take the Kananaskis Country Highway 40 turnoff and head south. If your base is Banff head east on the TransCanada for 52 km (32.5 miles) and turn south on route as above. Drive south for 69.5km (43.4 miles) to the Highwood Pass (Meadows) parking lot. Toilets here. From here continue on for 13.2km (8.25miles) down from the pass, the highway will curve east, park on the left side of the road, there should be a wide open grassy area here. Up along the tree line is an old road entrance marked by a boulder and perhaps a survey marker. This overgrown road leads to both Mt Lipsett and the valley to access Mist Mtn. Be careful turning around on the road if you are coming from the Highwood Pass.

Head up to the boulder and entrance to the old road, continue for a few minutes up the road to where it forks to the right. Take the road to the right. The left direction would lead to the Mt. Lipsett hike. After heading right in a few minutes you will come to a stream, cross this and you will be heading east parallel to the highway. This old road is extremely overgrown. You are basically wading through trees and bush along this section especially as you get closer to the left hand turn onto a narrow footpath. Watch for an orange survey ribbon on the left side of the road which marks this narrow footpath. This footpath will lead you into the alpine valley which goes between Mist Mtn and Nameless Ridge. If you miss this left hand turn and run into another creek that means you have gone too far, backtrack and look for the route again. Once you arrive in the open area of the alpine valley, head straight up to the col and then left into rocky bowl to access the slopes of Mist Mtn. About a third of the way into the bowl a steep slope to your right should be climbed. This slope takes you to a subsidiary summit of Mist. From this point you will see a prominent point as per the picture above and the true summit just behind. Scramble up to this point, then there is a short traverse, and a shorter narrow ridge to access the summit. You can return the same way or drop down into the upper portion of the bowl on a pretty good scree run. You can access the scree run midpoint between the subsidiary summit and the prominent point.
